For many of us, the term CBD oil has sprung up out of nowhere and is embraced by the millions. In just a short span, this main psychoactive component compound with over 100 chemical compounds known as “Cannabinoids” has moved from near-anonymity to one-cure for all. Cannabidiol (CBD), a type of chemical found in Cannabis sativa plants including the famous ingredient Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in cannabis has been used to potentially cure many curable and incurable diseases. From household owners, college campuses to medical institutions, almost everyone is using or talking about CBD.

As CBD is still a new concept, it has left many to speculate whether to use or not to use this CBD product to manage your number of ailments such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Inflammation
  • Anxiety & Depression
  • Muscle Disorder
  • Insomnia
  • Seizure disorder (Epilepsy)
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cancer-related ailments

With so many healing benefits, CBD oil is still under the radar due to its drastic side effects faced by doctors, physicians, and of course patients. Keeping this in mind, we thought of compiling all the negative effects of using CBD oil backed by scientific evidence that everyone should know about:

As we are still lacking clinical evidence and reliable information in favor & against CBD, it is hard to identify the pitfalls this oil might cause. However, there are still some ill-effects that most people have already experienced after using CBD:

Drowsiness

Both drowsiness and sedation are the most common side-effects of using CBD oil. In case you’re taking CBD for the first time, it is imperative to know its severity. The best you can do is to avoid taking CBD along with some other medications to minimize the possible risk.

Gastrointestinal Issues

When using CBD, some people also suffer from constant diarrhea along with some liver-related problems. Though some gastrointestinal issues can go away automatically with time, others need medical attention where physicians will check the age as well as medical history before monitoring the patient.

Dry Mouth

Drying mouth or cottonmouth is not a serious concern but it can make things worse if the person starts feeling irritation in the eyes with some dryness. This ill-effect particularly occurs with THC, but in some cases, CBD can also react the same way.

Can Interfere With Your Medications

If you’re taking any special medical treatment due to some prolonged disease, then CBD might interfere with the medications, supplements, and drugs while causing great risk to your health. Therefore, it’s better to ask your doctor in advance before taking CBD.

Nausea

It is reported that people have often experienced this after ingesting CBD oil. However,  factors like the sensitivity of the person and the amount of CBD taken also matter a lot. As CBD is available in many forms- gummies, tinctures, vapors to name a few, the side effects faced by people vary.

Other Adverse Reactions in Some People

In several cases, people have felt other adverse reactions even after consulting their doctors. And these are:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Lightheadedness
  • Fatigue
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Cognitive conditions
  • Changes alertness
  • Minimizing appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Tiredness

Most CBD products that are majorly produced in the form of capsules, creams, edibles, and even drinks do not have FDA approval. This means the product has not been carefully, systematically, and scientifically undergone thorough tests. This also puts the capability and functionality of CBD oil under doubt. Anyone who is using CBD must know about the following precautions and warnings:

  • If you’re pregnant or already breastfeeding, then taking CBD can put your and your baby’s health at risk. The possibility is CBD products that you have bought can be contaminated with some unfamiliar ingredients that you are not well aware of. So, avoid using CBD oil at the time of pregnancy.
  • People suffering from liver-related diseases including patients with high blood pressure must abstain from using CBD products.
  • CBD oil is not safe for children below the age of 1 year.
  • Taking high doses of CBD might worsen the condition of people with Parkinson’s disease. It can even negatively affect your muscle movements.
  • The regular use of CBD oil among teens can greatly impact their intelligence, memory, and behavior.

Though different types of CBD oil like Full spectrum, Broad spectrum, or Isolate can be used in various ways, it is important for the individual to know the functionality of each CBD product and how much dosage you need to reap multiple benefits.

  • For adults, the dosage of 200 mg or even less is needed
  • For children below the age of 1 year, doses of up to 25 mg daily are required before prescribing by the doctor.

According to medical experts, the right dosage of CBD oil varies from individuals to individuals and depending on various other factors too:

  • The total body weight
  • The type of CBD products you’re having
  • The purpose

No matter which form or brand of CBD oil you’re opting for, it is important for everyone to follow the necessary instructions:

  • Avoid taking CBD oil directly, it is better to mix them into food or drink for optimal results
  • Using a pipette or dropper can help you measure the amount you needed on a particular day
  • You can use CBD related capsules using water or any healthy beverage

The Bottom Line

Due to the unavailability of scientific and medical research, the risk related to CBD oil is debatable. Though, some studies have shown that CBD oil is effective to treat various ailments, conditions, and diseases while some suggest that more research needs to be done before making any assumptions related to CBD products.

At this time of COVID-19 crisis, it is ethically not right to market or buy unknown quality CBD products until or unless it is medically approved. CBD oil might offer plenty of health benefits to some people, but still, you need to focus more on quality rather than blindly following the trends that you’re not aware of.

Therefore, try exploring both potential benefits as well as risks before purchasing CBD-based products for you and your family!
